There is no single antioxidant that defines an effective formula. The category includes compounds with different structures, properties, and formulation requirements.
Understanding a few of the most studied groups makes it easier to see why antioxidants are used so widely in skincare.
CoQ10 and Green Tea Extract (EGCG)
CoQ10 is naturally present in the body and has been studied for its antioxidant properties and role in cellular processes. In skincare, it is often included in formulas designed to help address oxidative stress.
Green tea, is another well-known source of antioxidants. Its polyphenols, particularly EGCG, have been widely studied for their antioxidant and soothing properties in the skin. Both ingredients may appear alongside other antioxidants in a broader formulation.
Vitamin C in Skin
Vitamin C is one of the most extensively studied antioxidants in skincare. Research has examined its role in addressing oxidative stress, supporting collagen synthesis, and improving the appearance of pigmentation and visible signs of aging.
Its performance in topical skincare depends heavily on formulation. Vitamin C can be unstable, which means factors such as concentration, pH, stability, and delivery all influence how effectively it can be used on the skin.
Vitamin E in Skin
Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a lipid-soluble antioxidant commonly used in skincare. Because it interacts readily with lipid-rich environments, it has been extensively studied in relation to oxidative stress and the skin barrier.
As with any antioxidant, the presence of vitamin E alone does not determine how a skincare product will perform. Its concentration, stability, and place within the finished formulation all matter.
Grape-Derived Actives
Grape skins and seeds are naturally rich in polyphenols, making them an important area of antioxidant research. For Beau Domaine, this science has a direct connection to Provence and the Perrin family’s work with the vine.
Professor Pierre-Louis Teissedre spent 10 years studying grape phenolic compounds, including those found in Famille Perrin’s grape pomace. His research informed the development of GSM10® (Patent N° EP22206512.0), a patent-pending active ingredient containing extracts from the seeds and skins of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre grapes, together with a postbiotic. It also has greater antioxidant efficacy than vitamin C.
Professor Nicolas Lévy’s research into mechanisms associated with aging informed the development of ProGR3® (Patent N° EP22315060.8). This patent-pending active ingredient combines resveratrol from Famille Perrin’s vine canes with apigenin from chamomile flowers and catechin from green tea leaves.
